More about Bike Rack number plates

What is a Bike Rack number plate?

A bicycle rack number plate is a specialised licence plate designed to be attached to a bike carrier and displayed on the back of a vehicle carrying bicycles.

This is a smaller copy of your existing SA issued number plate and will have black characters on a white reflective background.

Do you need to have a Bike Rack number plate?

When attaching a bicycle carrier to the rear of a vehicle, you can either:

  • display a bicycle rack number plate on the carrier.
  • take the rear number plate off your vehicle and attach it to the bicycle carrier.

Your vehicle’s number plate must:

  • be clearly visible and easily read up to 20 metres away.
  • not be obscured by anything, such as a tow ball, bicycle, bike carrier, dirt buildup or any part of the vehicle's bodywork.

An easy-to-read number plate will ensure you are compliant with South Australian traffic laws and avoid fines from SA Police.

How do I attach a number plate to a bike carrier?

A Bike Rack number plate can be attached with ordinary screws or anti-theft screws to the bike carrier. These are available from any auto or car parts store. The plate must be clearly visible from behind the vehicle.

Can I make my own number plate for a bike carrier?

No. In order to comply with South Australian number plate laws, all number plates attached to any part of a vehicle, including a bike carrier, must be government issued number plates.

How long does it take to get a Bike Rack number plate?

Your Bike Rack plates will be ready in about 10 working days.

You can collect them from your nominated Service SA Customer Service Centre or have them mailed to you for a $20 postage fee.
