Can a Japanese plate be issued without being allocated to a car?

Japanese plates can be ordered online without allocating to a registered vehicle at time of order, but these can only be collected from a Customer Service Centre. The plate must then be allocated to a vehicle at the point of collection. In the event you prefer to pay for postage, you would be required to allocate the plate to a registered vehicle at the time of placing the order.

If I have a plate already on my car that I don’t want to lose, how can I replace it with Japanese plate and still have the original plate?

Depending on the type of plate already on your vehicle, you may have Reallocation Rights or may be able to purchase Reallocation Rights. Reallocation Rights allow a plate to be held under the client’s name and be reallocated to another vehicle in the same client’s name. To find out whether you have reallocation rights for your plate, please contact 13 10 84.
