What size is a general issue number plate?

For motor vehicles, the size of a standard general-issue number plate is 371mm x 133mm for both front and rear number plates.

For motorcycles, the general-issue plate is 215mm x 100mm and is only required for the rear.

How long does a standard number plate take to be ready?

If you apply for new standard issue plates, these will be available immediately at any Service SA customer service centre when you attend in person.

If you are ordering replacement plates, these will be available to collect from Service SA, or can be posted in approximately 10 working days.

Plates will only be issued provided the registration of the vehicle is current.

You can collect them from your nominated Service SA Customer Service Centre or have them mailed to you for a $20 postage fee.

How do I attach my standard number plate?

The general issue number plates are equipped with pre-drilled holes for your convenience. To attach the number plate to your vehicle:

1. Prepare a screwdriver and 4x 5mm standard or tamper-resistant screws.
2. Align the pre drilled holes to the holes on your vehicle and begin attaching the plate.
3. Tighten the screws to ensure the plate is secure.

Can I personalise my standard number plates?

No. Standard number plates cannot be customised. If you are interested in personalised or customised plates, we recommend checking out our personalised, or custom plate options. Make a statement on the road with various plate styles available to cater to your individuality.

Can I order a non-standard number plate size for my trailer?

A Non-Standard Trailer number plate can only be ordered in person at a Service SA Customer Service Centre for specific plate types.
